Force outs and Fielders Choice

If you have any rules related questions, please ask in this forum. In general, enforcement of rules is up to the Umpire of the game and iScore does not specifically enforce them, but we want to make sure we score within them. Ask here, and experts can chime in.

Force outs and Fielders Choice

Post by nthnu » Fri May 31, 2019 1:29 pm

A force out is for any runner that is out by tagging the bag or runner who is being forced.
A fielders choice is when any runner is tagged who isn't forced.

1 - Runner on 1st. Batter hits one to SS, then goes SS>2B. That'd be a force out.
2 - Runner on 2nd. Batter hits one to SS, SS tags runner. That'd be a fielders choice.
3 - Runner on 3rd. Batter hits one to P, P tags runner. That'd be a fielders choice.
4 - Runners on 1st and 3rd. Batter hits one to SS, then goes SS>2B. That'd be a force out.
5 - Runners on 1st and 3rd. Batter hits one to SS, then goes SS>C. That'd be a fielders choice.

I'm just wanting to make sure I'm thinking right on this :)

You are basically correct, but as far as the scoring is concerned, if the play is on any runner besides the batter, it is a fielder's choice for the batter. For example, in your situation #1 above, that is a force out on the runner at second, but it is an FC for the batter. In situation #4 above. the runner on 1st is forced at second, but the runner on third and the batter advance on fielder's choice (unless that is the 3rd out of course).
