Fall ball rule where you don't walk the 1st time (workaround defined)

Post by CycloneSteel » Mon Sep 12, 2016 11:20 am

We are playing in a league where the 1st at-bat if you walk, the last kid that got out takes your place on 1B and you start a new at-bat. I never considered this before firing up the iScore before the game and was scrambling all day to try to make that work. What a headache! Anybody have any good ideas? For the kid that was "pinch-running" I didn't really care about his running stats so much, since he didn't "earn" his right on base. But it would be nice to at least get the runs in and the RBI's credited. I just made game notes to credit an RBI to the right kid (though iScore didn't recognize that there was even a runner there) -and then adjusted the score that inning as well by one. Any ideas?

A workaround could be tapping the batter on first base and using a courtesy runner to get the last out in there. Then tap Misc -> Adjust Score and you can set who is currently at bat ... set it back to the same player again.

[updated]

Wow. Been using iscore and moderator on this forum for 7+ years, answered posts from all over the world (USA, latin america, asia, europe, Australia).
But Never heard of that variation.. What age? What state/city?

I was going to post ... Iscore can handle many variations ( e.g., start with runner on base, start w/ ball and strike on batter, start w 1 out in inning, have coach pitch after walk, etc ). But not built for your Scenario. No easy way to handle that w iScore - except for multi keystroke forced manual substitutions every play (but not sure worth the effort).

But before i could post . Supports provided an OUTSTANDING workaround !! Very creative. Out of the box thinking.
I would not have come close to thinking of that .

However, when i tried to test support's recommendation, it did not work as expected ( at least not on iOS version). It did not handle the courtesy runners as expected, when next player reached base, It duplicated the baserunner (i.e. when two runners on base, the same player shown on both bases, try and change one runner (tap on baserunner icon and choose pinch or courtesy runner) and iscore changes both to same number. @support Try it out for a couple of batters and you should see what i mean (at lest on iOS). if you can't replicate, i can explain in more detail steps by email . but Seems like a minor bug in the combination of pinch/courtesy runner usage when followed by a 'backwards' batting order change using misc > adjust score .. (problem when "go backward' in batting order but Works if adjustment is to 'go forward' in batting order).

again, Kudos to iScore and Support for the potential to handle this with the misc > adjust score method.

@support.. Let us know your thoughts

Obviously there is not going to be a perfect way to score this since it is not really how things work, so the stats will be "fudged" no matter what you wind up doing. Our guess is it lets you continue scoring the game fine despite showing the same player multiple times. It is a very awkward situation because the same "lineup position" will be on base multiple times, and the same lineup position can not be referred to with different names.

Try it in an actual game and see how it works out. You will probably be able to score fine, and just know the stats will not quite be right, but what is "right" in this situation if a player both walks and gets a hit in the same at bat? or walks and gets a strikeout (or whatever the result of the second at bat is).

Thanks guys! I also thought about maybe creating "Ghost Smith, Ghost Johnson", etc.. for each player and when they ghost ran they had a courtesy "Ghost" runner -and then put the player at bat again. I guess I'll try these suggestions on the fly Sunday. It's a new rule for us too --these are high school kids -more of a "JV" fall ball league (mostly freshman/sophomores. We play in Alta, Iowa. I kind of like the rule, kids see a lot of pitches, and kids that are getting out are still getting a chance to run the bases. But it's a headache trying to keep stats straight! :)

@ Support.. agree, going to be 'creative' use of iScore, and tradeoffs will be inevitable .

@CycloneSteel - ok, so this is high School.. JV fall ball. .. I can releate....

I see you are new to this forum... but i assume you are a veteran scorer and even a veteran iscore user (though new to forum), as the "Ghost Runner" idea is a creative approach. if you want, more brainstorming on other potential ways to workaround this with iscore, post back. I doubt there will be a large audience for this, but like to help you solve for Fall Ball.

Remember post games, you can go back and manually edit most all Stats ( eg., if you care about who really Stole the Base, or who actually crossed the plate with the Run).. the FAQ for editing post game Play by Play and stats can be found here http://iscoresports.com//baseball/kb/fa ... _edits.php

another thing to not forget, that can help alot is simply using NOTES liberally while scoring. you can write yourself notes who is actually on base running. and go back and make subs or delete notes post game as needed.

Thanks OhioTex. Yes I'm a veteran scorer, and used iScore for 2 seasons a few years ago. In little league My IPad shattered at the end of the year during a game (cleated after dropping), so I went old school the past 2 years. But the temptation was too great, and another coach wanted to see how this works, so I'm back! I'll mess around with the ghost/courtesy ideas and let you know if it works. The notes idea is good, since anything "critical" like an RBI is something I can just alter later. I can't decide if I want to give the kids credit for the 1st walk or not each time, probably not. I'm just glad I wasn't a victim of a foul ball as I coached 1st base with the IPad and struggled through the 1st inning when 2 kids "walked" and realized i had a problem lol

I think, after trying a fake game a couple times, that I can use the Misc, Adjust score, so when the batter walks the 1st time, I go back and change the order to the last out guy batting. Redo the at bat quick with the 4 balls, get the last out guy on base, courtesy run with "Pinch Runner 1". Then go to Misc/Adjust Score, set the lineup back to the correct kid with the fresh count. A lot of button pushing, and no "take" signs from the 3b coach :). Just hit the ball!

Interesting.

Remember you can "walk a batter" with out the 4 balls if you want by just in play > walk ( or 'intentional walk" )

This is going to be tricky. Must enter just right sequence. Going to take focus. I am
Going to try and play with some test cases and see what it does to scorecard and stats..

I am wondering when best to 'misc adjust' batter ie before he advances to first (ie walk and then undo, adjust, walk,) or after he walks . (Walk, adjust, courtesy run).

Also wondering (will Try some test cases) if you even need 'ghost runners' or if just normal courtesy runner works ..

If there is an out or a hit between ' adjusted batters' may work different than if back to back..

Hmm
