Earned run mistake

Post by mikeny » Thu Apr 19, 2018 4:12 am

Good morning,

I scored an inning yesterday:
AB 9: single
AB 1: 6-3, runner to 2nd
AB 2: runner advance to 3rd on PASSED BALL
AB 2: runner scored on RBI 1-3
AB3: struck out

iScore says Earned Run. The other team reported to the local newspaper seemingly rightfully so, based on MLB rule 10.16 that as reconstructed without the PB, this was an UNearned run and that the pitcher didn't give up any earned runs. I'm not sure why iScore made that mistake.

"10.16 EARNED RUNS AND RUNS ALLOWED
An earned run is a run for which a pitcher is held accountable. In determining
earned runs, the official scorer shall reconstruct the inning without the errors (which
exclude catcher’s interference) and passed balls, giving the benefit of the doubt always to
the pitcher
in determining which bases would have been reached by runners had there
been errorless play."

I was able to override the stat but I can't get the scorecard to update on p.3 for the joint scorecard or on p.2 for the single team's scorecard. Should I expect it too?

The emailed box score and uploaded box score are corrected. I would like everything to match.

Thanks.

We will have to come up with a way to handle that situation. With Errors, we ask if a runner would have been out without the error in which case we are able to determine that runner subsequently scoring is unearned. With a passed ball, the runner would not have been out so it is a bit different. We try and determine if the runner would have still scored and in some cases that is harder to do programmatically than it is for a person to figure out.

Your override of stats is the best way to handle for now. You can add a note to the game at the point of the runner scoring and the note will appear on the scorecard as well saying that the run is unearned.

Thanks. I added the note but it's not reflected anywhere on the scorecard. Is this a feature available on Android?

Ah yes.. sorry. Notes are only included in the emailed scorecard on the iOS version right now. They are on page 4 after the Pitchers listing.

The topic of earned/unearned run has been on this forum many times. iscore does a good job but is not perfect, especially tricky on pitcher subs.

if an official scorekeeper publishing to leagues/press, I would advocate the scorekeeper prove the box score and know iscore allows you to over ride unearned/earned runs. the human just better about reconstructing the inning without errors and passed balls than the program

one of the many suggestions in the idea backlog for future engagements is having a pop up menu at end of inning or after a run to verify earned or unearned, but i do not expect any program change in the near term.i teach folks who are 'official' scorers to be sure and prove the boxscore and double check earned/unearned runs.
