Advanced Pitching and Catching Stats Request

Post by Vic » Fri May 10, 2013 9:26 am

While I am on it today I might as well add some other things from my wish list. There are a few things that I would like greater visibility into regarding pitching stats. On catching stats MLB has been almost criminal in their lack of meaningful catching measures but there are a few that could be done to help us with our catchers.

Pitching and Catching Stats for Runs Allowed on Wild Pitches

Anyone who has coached at any level of youth Select/Travel baseball knows that a significant percentage of runs scored end up coming home on a Wild Pitch whenever you get a runner on 3rd. Right now we have the ability to see Wild Pitches as a total. It would be nice to have as a pitcher and catcher stat the number of runs that were allowed on Wild Pitches. I'm not as concerned about Passed Balls as they are counted as an error if I'm not mistaken.

Catching stats for pitches in the dirt that are blocked Successfully, Unsuccessfully or Not Blocked
There are very few measures for catchers. One that I would like to see is statistics regarding how well they block balls in the dirt. This could be done via a swipe action on Balls and on Strikes. I would like to see options for Ball in Dirt - Blocked (meaning no runner advanced) and Ball in Dirt - Blocked Unsuccessfully (meaning runners advancing) and Ball in dirt - Not Blocked. These options would probably have to be there for swinging strikes as well.

The reason I would like these catching stats is to provide meaningful measures for our catchers that let us know how well they are blocking (and not blocking when they should). One could argue that these are also good stats for pitchers.

Thanks!

These are both good, objective stats and we will add them to our list.

Thank you.

I agree. A simple "blocked" button on the pitch chart screen would be an excellent enhancement to both track catcher and pitcher performance.

Passed Balls and Wild Pitches are by definition not included in the ERRORS stats.
