Field postion "rest"

Post by cherrybomb » Mon May 11, 2009 6:41 am

In our league the girls often have at least one inning where they are off the field. I just haven't marked them for a postion, but then in the scoresheet view it doesn' t show the correct inning that they are in, and therefore the postions after their rest are not shown in the correct inning. A simple "x". But it needs to be available for more than one player. I think we can have up to twelve on our roster, so if everyone shows up there are three sitting off per inning, and they rotate.

Can you explain what you mean by "in the scorecard it does not show the correct inning they are in"?

As long as you are doing substitutions with the method described in YouTube video #2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6UeanYIgmo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false), then the scorecard should show each time the girls enter the game, and what position they are playing. It will not show when they leave a game --- that can be inferred by looking at someone else entering the game at the same position they were in.

My apologies, somehow I missed seeing the "inning" column. I could swear the output looked different yesterday, some of my players were listed for more innings than the game played. I had to "end game" when I looked at it again today. (I did look at the tutorial again, and i had done the substitutions correctly).

Player number 4 played C,P,P,P and
Player number 7 played P, C,C,C

the stats show #4 as IP (which I assume is innings pitched) as 2 and #7 as 1. I also notice that in the scorepad output inning three is labelled as inning two, would this be why?

Thanks for your timely responses!

If you can send us your database, we will look at your data and let you know what is going on. To send your database, press Options from the main menu, then click Export. When you get a Success message, send us an email at support@fasterthanmonkeys.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false, and send us your customer ID (bottom left corner of options screen).

fyi.. For total innings pitched, it is strictly based on outs. 3 outs = 1 inning.

Database/email sent.

I guess your reply about an inning brings us to the question: rather than ending an inning early through the misc menu, can it be a preset in with the number of innings, and number of fielders? (ie Inning ends after 3 or 5 runs?)

The rules for ending an inning early can get rather complicated. We don't think it is too hard to click Misc -> End Inning.

Many leagues are like "end an inning if 5 runs have been scored, but after the 4th inning, there is no limit", and any number of other variations.

Is there something about click Misc->End Inning that makes it not work well for you?

Thank you.

I guess I am confused. I thought that you were saying that the reason my inning was ending/ pitchers weren't showing the correct number of innings pitched was because I ended them early without three strikes. It worked fine for me otherwise.

Actually, ending an inning early could very well be the cause of the # of innings pitched for your players. We have not had a chance to review your database yet (we did get it though... thank you), but if you end an inning early, the current pitcher does not get credit for "innings pitched" for any outs that were not made. So if a pitcher comes in, makes zero outs in the inning, they effectively earned zero innings pitched. This is expected behavior. Pitchers only get credit for outs they make (1/3 of an inning per out). If it was not done this way, then ERA calculations would be wrong.

Please let us know if that explains what you are seeing (it sounds like it does), and we can save one of our developers from having to go through the raw data. If you think that is not the cause, we will go through the data to see exactly what happened.

Thank you.

I did mention above that I thought that might be the problem. Makes it a bit of a drawback for our use with the kids I guess.

Can you explain where the drawback is? If we can understand the concern, we may be able to address it, but I believe we are scoring correctly. We can't give credit for an inning if an out is not made... that is the definition of innings pitched.

Innings Pitched = number of outs recorded while pitching divided by three

That definition can be seen here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_statistics" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false

or

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innings_pitched" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false

and specifically in this link:

http://www.baseballstatmanager.com/stat-list.aspx#P_IP" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false

It states that "If a pitcher pitches in an inning, but does not retire a batter, the pitcher is not given credit for any innings pitched".
