Earned runs vs Unearned runs

Post by CoachBob » Thu Apr 30, 2009 3:52 am

I just typed up a real long explanation on why calculating earned runs is hard for any APP but it didnt post for some reason. I will shorten up my point.

Determining if a run is earned or not, requires the official scorer playing the inning out without the errors to determine if they had an impact on the runs. It isnt as simple as, there was an error so the run is unearned. With that being said, do you think it would be possible to have the APP to tell the user at the end of the inning how many runs were earned and then ask if they would like to manually override that number?

Also at the end of the game, could the APP ask who was the winning pitcher, who was the losing pitcher and who gets a save? This would allow you to add those stats to the pitchers line which is currently not included.

Could we also get team totals for the pitchers stats?

Thanks

CoachBob:

Nice suggestions. Team pitching totals would be great to have.

The developers have written that the Win/Lose/Save item is going to be added to a future version, (hopefully the next one?)

Team pitching totals is on our list of requests.

For the earned vs. unearned runs, we actually do the "replay of the inning" internally to decide if runs are earned or not. We spent a LOT of time reading all the specific rules on earned run situations to make sure we cover everything. Even things like 2 outs, runner on 3rd, pass ball scores a run, but then the batter winds up getting a hit anyway. In this case, if the batter struck out, the run would be unearned, but since the batter got a hit, it is now earned.

If you find a situation where our earned run calculation is incorrect, please let us know so we can fix it.

Thank you.

A similar situation would be on a dropped foul ball. If there is a subsequent hit by that batter (or any batter after that if there were 2 outs), an error could be charged to the fielder. If any runs scored relating to this, they could be considered unearned.

We account for this specific situation already. You just have to make sure you assign the error to the player when a foul ball is hit. Some scorekeepers don't realize that... but as long as you mark it in iScore, we account for this situation exactly as you describe.
