output of stats

Post by CoachBob » Wed Apr 29, 2009 4:41 pm

Could you change the output of the stats to be more traditional baseball style? They are a little hard to read because the stats arent in the order that we all grew up reading. Here is an output from an ESPN stats page.

AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
1 Kevin Youkilis BOS 74 20 30 8 0 5 15 1 0 14 14 .405 .516 .716 1.233
2 Victor Martinez CLE 86 15 34 5 1 5 11 0 0 10 8 .395 .449 .651 1.100
3 Carlos Beltran NYM 80 10 31 4 1 2 14 1 1 13 13 .388 .473 .538 1.011
4 Miguel Cabrera DET 76 12 29 2 0 4 14 1 1 9 13 .382 .453 .566 1.019
5 Nick Markakis BAL 84 23 32 9 0 2 22 0 1 13 13 .381 .460 .560 1.020
6 Jason Bartlett TAM 74 13 28 3 0 3 7 5 1 4 9 .378 .418 .541 .958
7 Evan Longoria TAM 75 14 28 10 0 5 18 1 0 8 16 .373 .429 .707 1.135
8 Robinson Cano NYY 86 17 32 5 0 5 16 1 0 6 8 .372 .409 .605 1.013
9 Aaron Hill TOR 97 15 36 6 0 5 20 1 1 7 12 .371 .410 .588 .997
10 Alberto Callaspo KAN 60 7 22 5 0 1 5 0 0 5 3 .367 .409 .500 .909

We intend to make the stats user selectable from a larger selection of available data as we get requests every day for different stats to be included / excluded, etc (both in the forums and via emails). Everyone has a different opinion on which stats are important and the order.

In fact, there is another thread where someone was telling us our labels are wrong when we use BA for batting average and that it should be AVG. You are showing BA below (which is what we use). I just bring this up to show how hard it can be to manage all users expectations.

When I look on SportsIllustrated.com, the stats come up in this order (and with these headings - which is where I think the person in the other thread got their labels):

AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K OBP SLG OBP

(slightly different order, not all the same statistics as what you mention)

We have really tried to balance including enough statistics vs. not too much, etc.

When the stats become user selectable, you will be able to get exactly the stats you want, in exactly the order you want just by configuring the software one time.

Hopefully we can make this happen soon... maybe not the release in a few days, but in the next one.

Thank you.

The SI listing of stats is pretty much acceptable too. Its just the way you have it now with the hits way off to the right, it is difficult to read. I have no problem with the avg (or BA) coming first. But, I really think you should adjust this to be in sync with a format similar to SI or ESPN. Its also how every newspaper in america has it so we are all used to reading stats that way.

We can probably reorder the stats to one of these two formats for the release coming out in a few days as a stop gap until the "choose your own stats" is available. We will move the additional stats we provide to the columns furthest to the right (we don't want to take away any stats because the ones that are there came from feedback of early users).
