Idiot proofing (replied)

Post by Wbuchanan » Sun May 28, 2017 5:57 am

After losing an entire game because I imported before exporting I found a flaw. The app should WARN what the consequences will be OR Export data BEFORE importing on request.

Here is the scenario,

Bottom of the 3rd, 2 Outs, Runner on First, Full Count, Pitcher throws, runner on first steals, second, Catcher throws down runner at Second for an Out, Ends the inning, Umpire Calls Game on time... The umpire never called the Pitch a Strike or Ball... I tried to fix this in game edit but adjusting pitch counts isn't easy. I did and undo but when I recored the pitch as a strike (what I thought it was), the rest of the game disappeared. I then made the BIGGEST mistake, I 'Imported' before Exporting the game losing all data. But, IMO, the app should have at least known a pitch was thrown (not a strike, ball, etc...) but a pitch. Otherwise, there is no way the catcher could have thrown down to Second for the Out...

Without the Umpire calling the pitch, it was impossible for me to score the pitch, so I put this on the Umpire but I understand why he didn't because of the situation. Perhaps a (rare Not Called selection in the app) to keep the pitch count updated properly... It's more important that the count is correct than whether it's a ball, strike, or foul... In Youth Leagues, the pitch count is IMPORTANT... Games are forfeited if you make a mistake...

Another easy way to keep the Pitch count correct is to Put a 'Pitch' button, and then Select whether it was a Ball, Strike, Foul, etc... Just because of this type of scenario. It's important to keep some data sacred for Youth Leagues, Pitch Count is one of them... Actually the MOST important, in the end no one cares what the batting average, ERA, etc... are, but a wrong Pitch Count can cost you the game...

1) The app does warn.
2) the app does cover the situation
3) i am unaware of a game 'disappearing'' from a device on an edit.. you can email support with your customer ID to see if they can look at your database and see how or why.

1) On "Option > Import "you are prompted to have to manually type 'yes' on the confirmation screen that warns thay your existing data will be replaced and irrecoverable.

2) The program can handle that situation correctly, your umpire may or may not have done correct. My guess if umpire was good, strike 3 batter out , 3rd out play at second was nothing,. If drop third strike - batter safe runner out at 2nd would be valid. If ball 4 then bad call by ump. Also you can get runner at second out without throwing a pitch, in multiple ways, the obvious is a pick off. but in some leagues left base early can be a no pitch out too for example

Not being there to see, dont know the exact scenerio. But i am confident iscore can handle .(but obviously the bigger issue is loosing data )

Iscore tracks pitch entry very well and has options for no pitch strikes and no pitch balls. All also helpful for accurate youth pitch counts

Hey, I'm not saying I don't like the app. I'm saying there can be improvement. Another competing app, starts the play by hitting the Pitch button then asks for the outcome of the pitch. This is better, imo... It keeps the pitch count accurate. As mentioned, in Youth Leagues, the Pitch Count is the most important stat... you can score the entire game wrong with wrong scores... but an Protest over the 'Pitch Count' can cost you the game.

I have used multiple systems too for scoring, paper and electronic. , PC based and mobile based. and all have plus/minus to user entry and features. you have to find that which fits your needs best. in my book, iscore is still the best balance of feature, ease of use and value.

Pitch count is important, but I have not seen how iscore does not track the pitch count correctly. Can you give example of inaccurate pitch count tracking?

As i mentioned in other posts, viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11894&p=48309#p48309 I am confident iScore can handle your situation, you just need to clarify what the outcome you want scored.

I agree the bigger concern is about data loss and i have offered to help try and recover data at this thread viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11895

for what it is worth, I have seen many coaches using dedicated pitch counters and paper books and programs all be wrong/ have different 'counts' -- nature of human element. as you know, high school went to pitch counts this year, and many states i saw adopted a reconciliation process between innings, knowing perfection was an unlikely standard. . i have seen travel leagues also have pitch count rules, but i have not seen any game lost on pitch count protest, if so, expect would have other interesting contributing factors involved besides +/- 1 pitch.
