Show opponent spray charts in Central viewer app (open, future.feature.request)

Post by 99C247DD7B » Fri Mar 31, 2017 6:36 am

As a coach, I would like to be able to use the website viewer and/or iScore Central viewer to view spray charts in-game. My scorekeeper is behind home plate, I'm in the dugout, and I'd like to shift my defense appropriately without asking my scorekeeper each batter.

My two cents. Highly unlikely to happen.

The target audience of the Viewer app is remote fans.

I am sure support will add to request list, but i would be very surprised it gets prioritized

I understand what you're saying about the target audience for the app. I never liked the viewer app and I always use the website as a coach to keep track of who's coming up and tell my parents to use the website to follow the game in-person or when they're on the road. In-game coaching tools seem like a natural progression of the product. If I'm iScore / SI Play and the business model is predicated on coaches using the scoring app first and evangelizing to parents, which allows them to make money off subscribers, I would first eliminate any barriers to downloading the scoring app (check), then make the scoring app so easy a caveman could do it (check), then give coaches real value like stats and spray charts (check, check), and then give coaches in-game management tools like pitch counts, spray charts, or even left-righty splits (which is basically what I'm suggesting). Basically I think a "read-only" version of the scoring app that updates when the game is being broadcast would be valuable as the first version of the coach's app.

(First, let me preface the thread with a notation/reminder: I am a moderator on the forum, a long time user, but not part of the company. I have no insight into the development priorities)

Iscore is an inexpensive app, . you have made a personal tradeoff to put the scorekeeper outside your reach. you are talking about a remote scorer and a secondary coaching device. .not they way iscore was architected .. that is a very different programing approach. there have been numerous ideas suggested in the past to improve iscore as a multi user model, but my sense is that is just much more than iscore is envisioned to be in any time soon.

i am sure support will add yours to the list for future consideration. they have a process for tracking all suggestions.

As to the coaching tools, Agree. Amen..

but Have you tried True media or edge HQ.? they are very extensive, depending on your data entry, pitch speed, location and type, entry, you get heat maps, match ups and tendencies etc. put the scorekeeper in your dugout and you can get more advanced coaching info on the fly on your iPad.

I am also a moderator and not affiliated with the company and I wanted to share my views on this.

I have agreed with iScores long-term stance that this is a scoring product first and foremost. This makes perfect sense. However, since they have moved to a pay model for the broadcast portion of the viewer, I believe the features of the broadcast should be beefed up to a degree. Certain aspects of the data we collect as scorekeepers are part of everyday broadcast viewers see on TV and are also crucial to an understanding of the game/score situation.

For instance, with the emphasis on pitch counts in many youth leagues and now even high schools, knowing the pitch counts is just as important to an understanding of the game situation as knowing which runners are on base, the count, and the number of outs. Little League WS games all show the current pitch counts constantly. Visit any major league ballpark and the pitch count is visible (at least for the home team's pitcher). Baseball fans expect this type of information to be readily viewable. This is not just a "coaching tool".

On the other hand, spray charts and R/L splits would fall into the coaching tool category IMHO. This type of information is typically not supposed to be available electronically for coaches during games. I believe the idea is that coaches prepare BEFORE the game using this type of information. In other words, I personally don't have an issue with iScore not providing this information for broadcast.

Just my $0.02.

If i had a vote...adding more pitch count data to broadcast views would be a higher priority than the spray charts. I also suspect it would be easier to add in code as the information already exists - just need a way to display any time. (aka click on player name and pop up) (UPDATED NOTE - iOS update now includes this, tap on player for stats)

i would add to the justification that petro points out, high School baseball, adopted pitch count regulations this year. so the information needs for current and past pitchers is much higher than before.

but to be clear, it does exist already. the iScorecast provides the pitchers Ball/Strike and Total pitch count on the screen, but only when pitcher is pitching, and not while on offense or after removed. (this is true for both the premium subscription viewer app and the free web browser version) .

The request (from the other thread) would be to make the pitchers counts available at any time, while pitching, while on offense and even post being removed.
