Runner not tagging up - Put Out?

Post by jks0157 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:19 pm

I do not like the option for runners that do not tag up on a fly ball. Yes there is an option for 'Left Base Early' but it has no other input and simply puts the runner as out. Statistically I don't think that is correct since it does not allow input as to any assist or put out. A fly ball caught by the left fielder who throws to third base to get the out for a runner not tagging should have a put out for the left fielder, an assist on the throw and then a put out by the third baseman. But simply saying 'Left Base Early' does not allow input for the throw from left field to third base which has to mean your put outs are incorrect and no assists get awarded. Can this be fixed?

Left base early is a softball term and refers to a runner leaving the base too early on a pitch ( no lead off allowed.). In your case you would mark the runner as out when asked what happened to runner at third, force out and select the fielders making the throw and the catch. You can add a note that they did not tag the base.

I have the same question/comment as the OP. I don't believe that "force out" is the appropriate scoring option, since strictly speaking this is not a force out but an appeal play (in FED rules this is 8.2, and 7.08 in OBR). By scoring it as a force out, rather than appeal would incorrectly cancel out a run that may have crossed the plate prior to the appeal. Not common, but could happen.

It looks like in the fifth item under "how to make an out" iScore supports the use of "left base early" for this situation:
http://iscorecentral.com/baseball/scorebook_legend.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Which circles us back to the need to score the assist and put out on this kind of play.

Thanks!

If you do not like the choice of "Left Base Early" or "Force Out", you can use Other as the choice for the out.

In any case, the assist and put out would be captured correctly as long as you enter the fielders that made the play.

Small clarification

iscore would handle that rare situation correctly... iscore does not automatically cancel out a run on a force out. Iscore asks "what happen to runner?" Starting w lead runner and working backwards towards batter and you have option to make any run across the plate 'not scored'.. So Iscore could handle that rare scenario

I just thought it might be a fairly simple thing to add a choice for 'Runner didn't tag up' or something similar that would allow for the assist and put-out to be entered. Maybe even changing the 'Left base early' to allow for the no tag up situation.
