Earned or unearned?

Post by broccoli » Fri Jun 07, 2013 11:31 am

OK folks: scoring opinions request...

Tie game, bottom 9.
Lead off man gets on via base hit to right.
Pitcher relieved.
New pitcher throws away pickoff attempt at first.
Runner takes second on the error.
Runner then takes third on passed ball.
Second batter singles to left.
Runner scores.
Game over.

Earned or unearned?

you have an error and a passed ball advancing the runner to third.... leaning toward unearned.

However there were no outs and the runner scored on a safe hit before the defense had an opportunity to make three outs....... leaning now toward earned.

Note—In determining earned runs, the scorer shall reconstruct the inning as if there were no errors or passed
balls. Give the pitcher the benefit of the doubt in determining the advancement of runners, had the defensive team
been errorless.

I'm going to guess ..... unearned!

Was I right?

Hey ixamnis,

Yeah, I was thinking unearned because without the error and passed ball we have runners at first and second (or first and third favouring the runner) with one out. That said, iScore called it earned, which was my reason for posting.

Any other opinions?

Is there a way to override iScore's conclusion?

Thanks for the replies...

That's a tough one since 3 outs were never reached in the inning, so you can't really play the complete inning through without errors.

If you want to override the earned run, go to Game Manager, select the game, selecting Pitching Stats, and tap the ER value for the pitcher and reduce it by 1.

I missed it, where was the out? Not that it matters.....

I know iscore isn't perfect. But for the most part, it is correctable.

This is a very good question for determining earned runs.
When the game-winning run scored, it behaved much like an inning ended after the third out.
One of the considerations in determining an earned run is if it can be shown that the runner could have without the aid of the E1 and PB (which here allowed an advance that is the defense's "fault"). Following is a reconstruction of the inning (with result of errorless play in parentheses):
B#1 becomes R1 after the single
R1 becomes R2 after the E1 (should have been on first)
R2 becomes R3 after the PB (should have still been on first)
B#2 singles, scoring R3 (at best R1 would have advanced to second or third)
That's all there is, there isn't any more plays to work with.
So thumbs-up :) to those who ruled the run as unearned. (BBCode, we need a thumbs-up smiley!)
