Ipad overheat, shut down!

Post by Cferris » Mon Jul 02, 2012 6:01 am

Tournement in Michigan, temperature approaching 100 degrees, standing in direct sunlight, 3rd inning, Ipad shows overheat warning and shuts down. MAYDAY! Solution, remove from case, get ice towell from cooler, lay Ipad on towell, cools down over the course of two batters, restarts no problem, continue scoring while holding ipad and ice towell, no case. Thinking about other solutions that may help, any thoughts?

Had a similar issue at a State tournament a couple weeks ago, similar solution. I have since tested in much hotter games and have come to the conclusion that the sun on the screen is the biggest culprit. I now shade the screen either with an umbrella or even cardboard. Anything to keep the display out of the direct sun. Have not had heat related issues since.

There have been many reports of this on the forum...do a search and you'll find quite a few. Not sure if this was more of an ipad 1 problem if if all generations suffer from this. What are you guys using?

Direct sunlight does seem to be the culprit as mentioned.

And, using a cold pack (maybe in a ziplock bag) or similar approach is a common solution.

I have used on ipad1 for 3 seasons and have been fortunate to not have had this happen. I do try to avoid direct sun.

That has happened to me several times here in TN. This past weekend we hit 117. What I do is when I 'feel' it getting warm, I always carry a couple of extra frog toggs for my daughter (catcher), I will grab one and put it on the back of the pad and within a couple of mins it will be cool enough to work.

I purchased the New iPad, 3 weeks ago. Started scoring my first game the next weekend. Top of 2nd inning it overheated. Luckily, since it was my first game, I had someone sitting next to me following along with my book. Was able to take over the book and continue the game. I was sitting in direct sunlight. Haven't played since to test shading the iPad.

I have a lawn chair that has a "roof" on it and am taking it all the way from Toronto to Florida just for the overheating problem. I have had the overheating a couple of times last year but keeping it out of the sun definitely helps

I have had this happen to me. You have to think of the iPad screen as a solar collector. It is black! Sun hitting it directly will make it very hot very quick. I realized this when we were in Monterey and the temperature was cool, but had bright sunshine. Left the iPad on the bench for a few minutes between games and it overheated.

Try to stay in the shade or turn it on end between data entry so that the screen is not facing the sun.

It has been suggested at other times in this forum, that you place the pad in a zip lock bag, make sure it is tightly closed and place it on top of ice in your cooler. This will cool the padre sufficiently to use.
