Batting Status - what do the options mean?

When I set up a player I see a batting option of No, Yes, DP and Flex. I'm fairly new to this so I want to understand these options before I mess up something at the ball park.
I assumed I'd set everyone to yes, unless it's a league with a DH, then the pitcher is No. But, when running a mock game a had ten position players entered, all with 'Yes' for Batting. I eventually saw that 10 different batters had a plate appearance in a single inning!
So I then thought maybe 'Yes' is for the people that will be batting to begin the game. Is this correct? I also don't know what DP or Flex means.
Can someone elaborate? I viewed both tutorials (put together very well, btw), but there was no explanation of the batting options.
