The action goes on ... (answered)

Post by Bibi50 » Mon Sep 12, 2016 4:37 am

I know how to score the following action on paper, but not on iScore (Android version).

Runners on first and second.
No outs.

The batter hits a slow grounder towards SS, who fields the ball and assist the second baseman for a forced out of runner on first;
the runner on second reach third while the batter-runner reaches first safe for FC.

But the second baseman throws to first and his throw is a clear error, so that the runner on third scores on the error and the batter-runner reaches second.

How to indicate the continuation of the action ?
On paper is a simple "-" between first and second for the BR and between third and for for R3, but on iScore ?

Many thanks

In iScore generally follow a 'score what you see' approach ..

Assuming no out . Runner on 1st and 2nd

In iscore if you want to enter as a single continuous play, i would enter as:

In play> Safe > fielders choice > place hit, medium grounder > ss - 2b (6-4) > what happen to runner on second? Safe , tap home , error, 2b, error throwing > what happen to runner on 1b? Out, second , force out > what happen to batter ? Safe, tap second, same error

The run will be noted as unearned ( you may need to go back and revisit later depending on how rest of inning goes)

There will correctly be no hit and no RBI assigned in stats . SS gets an assist, 2B gets a put out and an error, Correctly only 1 error assigned.

Someone could question if an error should be assessed since trying to turn the double play. As it is allowed by rule in some cases and you described it as an error allowing the run to score . I would defer to your live view. The alternative would be to advance on fielders choice runner to home and second and the run be earned .

Although the above entry sequence will look right in stats, and on iscorecast... On a closer exam of the pdf scorebook, one could prefer For the player who scored, the notation at third base be an AB# (advance by batter) instead of e4. To make scorebook show the AB at third base for runner who scored.. . One Would enter as two part play in iscore . (finish FC part 1 with runners at first FC, runner out at 2nd, and runner at third advsnce by runner. then enter the error as a second part, by taping runner icon at 3rd base, and advance home on e4 throw and runner at 1st to 2nd on same error). True This is two events in iscore so iscorecast will kinda show like two plays but most viewers will get and you can note 6-4-3 e4t in moted forbclarity . .A trade off .. Pdf Scorebook technically correct or isocrecast? . (Stats correct either way)

Also note that there is a setting in iScore if you tap the settings in the bottom right of the scoring screen called "Minimize Questions". It defaults to Yes and will not ask follow up questions. If you set it to No, then it will ask specifically about the runners on each base after you enter the main play for situations exactly like this. (Some users do not like being asked what happened to the runner on first after they just said the runner reached on Fielder's Choice, but if we don't ask, you can not enter these "continuation plays" as part of the same sequence.)

Great point support !

I assume toggle settings ..
scorekeeper level set to advance not basic
minimize questions set to no
Record hit locations set to yes

I can not recall the default behavior on toggle settings. but i teach folks to set as above .. Use advanced. non minimized and show hit locations.. So my steps in prior post include all.

That said, In this example, i believe, even if set to basic and mimimized questions. You will still be asked about runners from 2nd and 1st b/c Fielders choice does not have an auto default on how to handle lead runners . What you would loose is choice of error by fielding or throwing

Thank you all for the prompt reply and very clear explanation !

(The toggle settings were as per your last post.)

Now I have a guidance to make my tests and find the best way to go.

Thanks again

You are Welcome

want you to be able to use and enjoy iScore baseball as much as possible.

Sounds like you are a veteran of paper scoring, And even tried/used iscore a few years back ( based on forum posts). .. Perhaps struggled to learn or just took a hiatus, regardless - more than happy to help answer questions so you can confidently use iscore more

Hi,

a long story follows...

my nickname tells you that I was born in the year 1950, but I started to be interested in baseball just in 2010 because, as a retired person, I had time to accompany the young son of a friend of mine to the training sessions.

So I discovered baseball and the related statistics. A lot of new things to learn !

iScore was the easiest way for me to participate to the games and to help the team just for fun.

But Baseball (not so common here in Italy) was (is) full of difficult rules and so I decided it was time to learn them.

Guess what : in 2012 I became an umpire for the Italian Federation of Baseball and Softball and I still umpire every week-end from March to July and September-October.
Scoring was put aside and almost forgotten.

Then in winter 2014 scoring came to mind, and this time I decided to study the subject seriously : I became an official scorekeeper for the Italian Federation. Obviously using paper and pencil.

Now when not "on duty" (rarely) I take my tablet (and iScore) with me.
Compared to the initial experience I now find iScore much more enjoyable but in a few cases I'm in trouble because I know what I should score, but can't find the right way to get it done !

Cheers
