Re: DP and Flex
I've said it before and I'll say it again..This rule sucks administratively. I'm sure for the players it's pretty nice, but per the admin stuff of trying to keep track of it plus know all the rules..this rule sucks.

Re: DP and Flex
Most (including me) don't really understand full scope of this rule. It gets used as like a DH for the most part. Occassionaly you find yourself with an opportunity to really take advantage, but I'm with everyone else. This rule requires a college course to really understand the details.

For anyone that thinks he's exaggerating, he's not.
Re: DP and Flex
I wish there was a college course in the DP/Flex. That would be an easier route than the route that I took. A home study course at the campus of hard knocks. It is a week course taught at softball tournements during the summer. A lot of trial and error joined with missteps and outright screw ups. I pretty much have it down but, there are some "masters" out there that are "too" creative (ex Enron/AIG/GS people I am sure). They can turn keeping the book into a game of 3 card monte.......find the DP? Where did she go?

Re: DP and Flex
Where is the DP? Always on the bench.
Unless you are tracking the stats for the opposing team's defense its not too much of an issue.
Then there is the whole 1/2 substitution portion of the DP/Flex rule - That usually takes a good 5 minutes to explain if all of the parties aren't paying attention.

Republishing a couple external links on DP/Felx... for ease of re-finding..
(at a minimum, DP/Flex can be found in NCAA, NHFS, and ASA fastpitch softball)
Understanding the ASA/NFHS DP / Flex Rule -(thanks Thunder Coach) http://www.fastsports.com/tips/tip25/index.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
DP/Flex Strategies for Coaches (thanks UmpBryan) - http://www.nfhs.org/Workarea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=3843" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
FYI - Most Basic Definition..
Designated Player (DP)
The player who is initially listed on the lineup card in the team’s batting
order but not in the defensive lineup.
Flex Player
The player who is initially listed in the 10th spot on the lineup card may
play any defensive position and may only enter the game on offense in the
designated player’s batting position.
