Calculating the evolotion of stats

Post by iscore@tragus.org » Wed Apr 28, 2010 3:02 pm

Do I have enough information in the "stats.xls" provided by the phone to calculate the OBP and BAA pitching stats? If so, what are the formulas I should use so that I match the iScore values?

The reason I want to calculate my own rather than using the iScore values is that I want to chart various statistics over time. So, for instance, I'll have a data point for Game 1 that shows some statistic (let's say ERA) for that game. For Game 2 I will show that same statistic across games 1 and 2. For Game 3 it is across the first three games. Etc.. Essentially I'm going to chart the cumulative stats as they evolve over time.

I'm doing this all in a big nasty spreadsheet and if I manage to make it work I'll gladly post it for others to use if there's an interest.

Are you trying to calculate stats that iScore does not already provide?
If not, why not just pull a cumulative stat report right from the app?
Why go through all of the trouble of recalculating the stats? I purchased this app specifically because I could get the stats provided any way I wanted them. I have stats by tournament, player stats against a particular team, player stats by month, and using the League and Team managers I can slice and dice stats anyway I want them. You paid good money for this app - get your $10 worth. :)

The app is worth far more than $10! I've been using it since last fall and wouldn't dream of scoring a game any other way.

The cumulative stats the app provides are a static point in time. What I'm interested in is the ability to show the progression of the cumulative stats over time.

Imagine we're at the beginning of the season. I get the team's cumulative stats after Game 1 and save that XLS data on one tab. For each kid on the team I draw a graph of, for instance, their batting average. Not very exciting since there is only one data point per kid.

After Game 2 I get updated cumulative stats and save that XLS data onto another tab. I once again draw a graph of each kid's batting average. This is twice as exciting because now I have two data points per kid.

Continue this process as the season progresses and things get more entertaining. After 10 games I have 10 data points per kid and the graphs are beginning to look interesting. I can see that Kid X hit a three game batting slump or Kid Y has been gradually increasing his K/BB ratio.

Now... if I haven't been exporting cumulative stats after each game I don't have the cumulative data I need. I *can* leverage the league functionality to get it (e.g. - create a Foo league, add Game 1, export cumulative then add Game 2 and export cumulative, etc until I have all games to date) but... I already have the per-game stats because I've been exporting them all along. It seems like I should be able to use that data to create the cumulative data that I failed to export and, in fact, after an hour or so with Excel I have it working except for the OBP and BAA pitching stats I was asking about.

Now I get it. Very interesting. I'm sure a 3d bar chart of each data point for each player would really look cool. Might be a good motivational tool as well. I would be interested in seeing what you come up with. Good ideas like these only make this app even more valuable.

Looks like one stat is missing that is required for a perfect reproduction --- Sacrifices against the pitcher. OBP can be calculated one of two ways:

OBP = (H + BB + HB) / (BF - SacBunts)
or
OBP = (H + BB + HB) / (AB + BB + HB + SacFlies)

BAA = (H) / (BF - BB - HB - SacBunts - SacFlies - CatcherInterference)

Since this is really a one time thing (to get data to your spreadsheet), you can use leagues to get the data you want. Start with a new league called "Spreadsheet" for example. Put just the first game in that, turn off all leagues except for that one, and email yourself the stats. Then add the second game, and email the stats again. Then add the third, and email again. Continue doing this until you have all the data you want.

Thanks for the formulas! We don't often have sacrifices (only 2 out of 17 games) so I think I'll just leave a placeholder column for SacFiles, SacBunts and CatcherInterference. That will let me complete the spreadsheet and if you sneak those into the output in the future I should be able to integrate it quickly. If anyone on the team wants perfect accuracy I can do the "spreadsheet league" deal.

It's been a while but I now have a more or less working version of the trending spreadsheet. You're invited to download it and give it a try. If you have any questions post 'em up here or feel free to email me using my forum ID as an email address.

The spreadsheet is available as an attachment at: http://sites.google.com/site/jcejohnson ... tatstrends" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
