Counting First Downs

Post by tcochard » Fri Sep 19, 2014 12:14 pm

In the game summary, the number of first downs for each team has been a lot higher than what we are tracking manually.

When you are counting first downs, are you including ALL first downs or only earned and penalty first downs? What I mean is, are you counting the first down to start a possession as one of them? If so, is that appropriate? I would think that you would only count first downs that are earned or assessed by penalty on the defense. It would seem odd if you would count the first down that starts a possession (after a kickoff or punt by the opposing team).

It sounds like you are actually looking for the sum of the stats FD1D + FD2D + FD3D + FD4D (which are the first downs earned on each play). We also keep track of the number of times each team actually ran a first down (which would be the 1D stat), and there are also Passing and Rushing First downs earned (both "FD" in their respective sections).

You can see all the stats available in the legend here:

The legend is also available by tapping the "?" icon in the application when viewing stats, and is included in the emailed stats.
