error or Stolen base or what?

If you have any rules related questions, please ask in this forum. In general, enforcement of rules is up to the Umpire of the game and iScore does not specifically enforce them, but we want to make sure we score within them. Ask here, and experts can chime in.

error or Stolen base or what?

Post by ixamnis » Mon Feb 17, 2014 6:17 am

runners on 1rst and third. Runner on first steals second. Catcher throws to second base. second baseman comes over to cut the ball to keep the runner at third, but doesn't touch the ball. Shortstop doesn't catch the ball either at second base to tag the runner stealing from first. (As I recall the shortstop does not touch the ball either). Ball rolls out to center. Runner at third scores.

I scored it as a stolen base for the runner at first and the runner from third scored on the throw. The official scorekeeper awarded the run scored on an error by the shortstop. I've seen an error called even when the player didn't touch the ball, but normally the shortstop would have to touch the ball for an error to be called on her. If there was an error would it have been on the catcher? But the catcher made a good throw. Good throw, nobody touched the ball and that is why I didn't award an error.

I could have missed seeing the shortstop touch the ball though. Unfortunately no instant replay.

Thankfully I don't have to answer to the coaches and parents anymore.. I just keep score now for fun and to keep my head in the game.

Judgement by those who saw it live..

But Touching the ball is not required to make an error ..
(Example ball through wickets, ).

e - An error is charged on a throw to a base where more than one
fielder could have received a throw and neither did; charge the error
to the fielder who should have received it.
