Pop up hit?

Ok .. Help. Who saw and can explain .. Why mlb scored a hit (not e1) .World Series game 1 .. Bottom of second..boston Batter (drew) pops up infield ball that falls right in front of cardinal pitcher wainwright.. I can't believe mlb scored it a hit.. Why?

No one touched the ball. There is no category for mental (stupid) errors.

@larrykoch - that is a fallacy. Touching the ball is not a requirement. Ordinary effort is.

We have covered that before in this forum

Rule 10.12(a)(1)
" It is not necessary that the fielder touch the ball to be charged with an error. If a ground ball goes through a fielder’s legs or a fly ball falls untouched and, in the scorer’s judgment, the fielder could have handled the ball with ordinary effort. scorer shall charge such fielder with an error"


As we are talking red socks and World Series , I am reminded of an example An official scorer, once taught me

ground ball hit by mets Mookie Wilson in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series that passed through the legs of Boston’s first baseman – Bill Buckner .. – lead to the Mets winning the game on the run that scored as a result. Buckner didn’t touch the ball, but it was scored an error nonetheless.


P.s. The "no error on mental mistakes" is not an absolute either. Rules specify various mental gaffs that are errors too.
