DP,Flex & Subs

If you have any rules related questions, please ask in this forum. In general, enforcement of rules is up to the Umpire of the game and iScore does not specifically enforce them, but we want to make sure we score within them. Ask here, and experts can chime in.

DP,Flex & Subs

Post by red3339 » Sat Mar 09, 2013 11:27 am

If you use a DP & a flex in a high school softball game, can you then sub another girl in twice for someone different?

You can sub for the DP or the Flex. You can also sub the DP for The flex or the Flex for the DP And re-enter going from 10 players to 9 back to 10.

I agree w what AE's said.. But ..

But not sure i understood or if that answers the question 'sub another girl in twice for someone different'

NFHS rule for softball allows all players "1 re entry".
(The key is they must stay in same batting position.)

Here is a scenario ... subs in another player, bench Betty, twice, for someone different, starter sally, and player pat - none of which are DP/Flex

bench Betty, and player Pat, start on bench, (ie are not fielding or batting, are not "in the game" )
Starter Sally who plays short and bats 2nd in line up... (is not DP or Flex)

Second inning, Sub in bench Betty for starter Sally.. Betty Takes Sally's 2nd spot in batting order.
( Betty in game and Sally out of game)

Third inning, player pat subs in for Betty and takes 2nd spot in batting order
(both starter Sally and bench Betty out of game )
... Both Betty and Sally are both eligible to enter game for pat and take the 2 hole batting spot, but only the 2 hole slot. ( ie neither Sally or Betty can bat in any other slot, locked into 2 hole)..
fourth inning, Betty sub in for pat

So Betty sub in twice for another non DP/flex player..first Sally and later pat.

.......
DP/Flex players also are each allowed "1 re entry" but it can be harder to track
As they both start 'in the game'. When a DP goes into field , it is not a re entry for DP, because they were already in the game . Same if a flex bats. not a re entry for them unless the were previously pulled out of game .

I found this powerpoint presentation for umpires that does a good job of explaining subs, courtesy runners, and dp/flex. It says it is for ASA and HS.
