Loss or No Decision?

Post by KristinaKB » Thu Oct 11, 2012 7:33 am

Full 7 inning softball game. In bottom of an inning (4th I think - book isn't in front of me), starting pitcher leaves game injured, with game tied at 1-1, and one on base with one out. Serveral runs score in the remainder of the inning, and team goes on to lose. Is that a loss for the starting pitcher, since the runner left on was the go ahead run? Or a no decision since the game was tied?

Yep, pitcher is responsible for runners he left on base.

Agreed as well, even though it's a bad break for the starter to get charged with the loss for yielding run #2 and the successors allow even more runs.

This rule has changed several times in baseball. Walter Johnson lost a win streak due to the old version of this rule if I remember correctly, getting a loss due to an inherited runner.
