Hidden ball question

Post by pucke275 » Tue Jun 26, 2012 4:36 pm

Runner on second. Pitcher step off the rubber and, with ball in hand, feins a throw to second base. The SS, 2nd Baseman, and Centerfielder all dive and scramble pretending that the ball was thrown and they missed it. Pitcher is still standing on the mound now with the ball in his glove. I can't find anything in the NFHS rule book, but this seems as if this should be treated as a hidden ball trick. What should be the ruling and is it stated in the rule book?

If the pitcher is off the pitcher's plate and time has not been called, then it is a live ball.

If it's softball, then the only place the pitcher can go after taking ehr place on the plate is home. She can step off, but it's not a live ball.

Is this softball or baseball?
