Catcher error or not

Post by coach1 » Fri May 18, 2012 5:34 am

Runners on 2nd and 3rd. Grounder hit to pitcher who throws home attempting to put out runner advancing from 3rd. Catcher recieves ball and tags home thinking he has a force and throws to first putting batter out. Is this scored as an error on the catcher because he wrongly assumed he had a force play and did not tag the runner who would have clearly been out by 2-3 steps? Thanks for all the valuable information you all provide!

Mental mistakes are not errors.

Just to extend this explanation, but even if the catcher had not gotten the batter out at first, there still would not be an error on the play. The batter would be charged with a fielder's choice.

Thanks, thats the way I scored it but there were others there who disagreed. I can always count on this forum for the right answer.

Had this happen last Saturday, except the catcher didn't get the out at 1st. Scored it a FC.
