Error on pickoff attempt with no advancement

Post by fremont » Sun Apr 14, 2019 12:31 pm

I scored an error (E1 throw) on a pickoff attempt where runner committed and dove back late. With a good thrown, he's out by a mile, but throw was low and was deflected about 20' away. F3 got it back from R1 could make it to 2B. (I think R1 was actually still too traumatized to run.) Regardless, my logic was 9.12(a)(1) in that the pitcher's bad throw prolonged a runner's time on the bases.

Concur or disagree?

Pure judgement call. Was the throw early enough to get the runner but required more than ordinary effort on the pitcher's part? Then no error. Those are the types of questions to ask yourself on this type of play.
