Scoring a 3rd strike foul ball w/none to waste

If you have any rules related questions, please ask in this forum. In general, enforcement of rules is up to the Umpire of the game and iScore does not specifically enforce them, but we want to make sure we score within them. Ask here, and experts can chime in.

Scoring a 3rd strike foul ball w/none to waste

Post by 6aw5em2y3r » Fri Nov 09, 2018 12:52 pm

How do you score the out when the batter Fouls Out for the 3rd strike?
This would be in softball, when the batter has 2 strikes and it's "gotta be".
Ex: batter hits it foul and/or out of play for the 3rd strike and the ball is not caught be a fielder.
Do you score that as a strikeout?
I have always been told that, and counted it as such, but now some guys are complaining that it doesn't count as a "K"
What do we do?

I assume you are talking about a Bunt foul for third strike.

In iscore, when you , Tap strike for strike 3. you are presented a screen to further clarify the out. including ‘bunt foul’ option

There should be no doubt this is a strike out

MLB scouring rule ..
(a) The official scorer shall score a strikeout whenever a batter:
(1) is put out by a third strike caught by the catcher;
(2) is put out by a third strike not caught when there is a runner on first before two are out;
(3) becomes a runner because a third strike is not caught; or
(4) bunts foul on third strike, unless such bunt on third strike results in a foul fly caught by any fielder, in which case the official scorer shall not score a strikeout and shall credit the fielder who catches such foul fly with a putout.

In baseball , .. A third strike bunt foul out = strike out is a black and white rule.... ( One may agree or disagree with the reason for the rule but it has been a baseball rule for decades)

In Fastpitch softball, You may see some debate w umpires if it was a bunt or not with a a slapper at bat ... bunt foul (3rd stike out) or declared a slap hit foul ( then just a foul ball).

Scorekeeper should credit as a K (forward ) for both pitcher and batter (Ks). Put out credited to catcher. Dead ball and Runners not able to advance .

Update: upon further re read of your your post.. What level/ league are you in , not all leagues follow MLB rules.

Reason: update: potentially slow pitch league question

upon re reading your original thread. your "gotta be" phrase got me thinking ... perhaps you are taking about slow pitch ( non stealing) softball leagues where bunts are not allowed and any third strike foul ball not caught is considered and out. Although my original response assumed you were talking about 2 strike, uncaught bunt foul outs in standard baseball or fast pitch softball, the answer is most likely the same.. unless your league specifically designates a deviation form standard ORB scoring standards, .. strike out credit to Pitcher and batter .

most leagues i have found default to official rules of baseball unless otherwise specified. .what league/level are you talking about? perhaps they have a published rule book or comparison/contracts to fast pitch or baseball rules.

one of the nice things about iscore, it just lets you 'score what you see' it does not impose the rules, just documents the action and as such is flexible to handle many variations of baseball and softball rules.
