WP/PB/D3S questions

Post by nthnu » Wed Jun 13, 2018 12:18 pm

I know that wild pitches are those the catcher can't get their hands on.
Passed balls are ones the catcher can catch but the ball gets away.
Dropped 3rd strikes are basically like passed balls with no runner on first base or with a runner on first base and two outs.

A wild pitch and passed ball on 3rd strike, and the dropped 3rd strike, allow the batter to run to first, right?
For a K WP the batter would have to swing at it.

To write it on a scorecard it'd look like these, right? If batter makes it to first on a WP/PB/D3S...K WP, K PB and K E2, if batter is out on a WP/PB/D3S...K 2, and K 2-3.

Wouldn't a K PB basically be a K E2?

I guess a K WP could be a K E1, or is that a thing?

Thanks

Wild Pitches and Passed Balls are kept as their own statistics. They are explicitly NOT errors according to the rules of baseball. They can lead to an error if the catcher recovers the ball and overthrows first base and the batter-runner advances to second as a result. But WP and PB are their own stats that are tracked separate from errors.

That being said, one subtle difference is that a Passed Ball is treated as an error for purposes of earned vs unearned runs (a batter that makes it on base as the result of a Passed Ball will not be an earned run if they score, or if a runner scores on a passed ball it will not be an earned run unless things happen after that play that would have scored the runner anyway... like a base hit by the following batter) whereas a Wild Pitch is not treated the same as an error for these purposes (a batter that reaches based as the result of a wild pitch or a runner that scores on a wild pitch is an earned run).
