Ruling Pitch hits batter who swings (answered)

If you have any rules related questions, please ask in this forum. In general, enforcement of rules is up to the Umpire of the game and iScore does not specifically enforce them, but we want to make sure we score within them. Ask here, and experts can chime in.

Ruling Pitch hits batter who swings (answered)

Post by KevTN » Sat Mar 31, 2018 11:17 am

Ot sure of the rule...highschool softball game. Batter swing hit ball with inside of forearm stays in fair territory. Ump calls dead ball. Coach argues should be live ball and because first was tagged should be an out.

How should it be scored/ruled?

Scored however the umpire rules it. In the end the umpires decision will stand. In the case of a ball hitting arms / hands, it is supposed to be a strike swinging. The ball did not hit the bat.

@kev

the rule citation would be found in the definition of a Strike and dead ball scenarios. the rule is the same for baseball and softball regardless of level, NFS, NCAA, or MLB

A strike is called when a batter swings at a pitch (in or or out of strike zone). A dead ball is called when a pitch hits a batter. Award a base if batter hit by pitch out of strike zone and not a strike. Call a strike if batter swings or if pitch in strike zone.

Ump was right; dead ball strike.

I ump'd (and coached) for many years. 80% of coaches have a command of 30% of the rules.
