Fielder's Choice or Hit? (open debate)

I scored this as an FC. My daugther says no. Two outs. Runner on second. Ground ball to SS. SS holds the ball and does not throw to first for the third out. Runner on second stays. FC or hit since SS should have made third out - mental error on SS?

Fielder's choice if you think SS could have gotten the out at first. Mental error maybe. Why didn't she throw? Mental error can be noted but does not affect statistics.

If it was a "routine" play where in your best judgement it should have been an out then I would rule a fielders choice. If it was a tough play, ball was in the hole, she had to dive or something similar, then you can justify a hit.

Hits/errors depended so heavily on seeing the play and knowing the level of play .. very hard to pass judgement on forum. the key is to try and apply consistent objective approach over time.. .

that said, I would probably lean towards an infield hit, because most rule sets (eg mlb, ncaa, usa) have a stated preference towards batter and failure to throw is not by itself an error. sounds like Your defender did not make a physical mistake.. and mental mistakes are not always scored an error. so i would probably lean towards a hit. now the pitcher and pitcher parent may disagree ..

FC. If a play on a runner trying to advance one base or return to their original base is unsuccessful (I view F6 as "making a play" on R2), then it's a FC if the play would have instead been made on B-R.
