Scoring Question: First and Third (responded)

If you have any rules related questions, please ask in this forum. In general, enforcement of rules is up to the Umpire of the game and iScore does not specifically enforce them, but we want to make sure we score within them. Ask here, and experts can chime in.

Scoring Question: First and Third (responded)

Post by Jas » Sat Mar 04, 2017 9:17 pm

Many times, during a first and third situation, the runner on first will steal to draw a throw to allow the runner on third to try to score. Or, a runner on first will break early or get picked off and get in a rundown to allow the runner on third to try to score. My question is how do you score the runner from third if he is safe? Is he entitled to a stolen base or is there some other statistic for this situation?

Appreciate the help,

Jas

@jas.. i see by your user profile, you are a long time iscore user and contributor to the forum community ... thanks!

I assume you are asking about the 'scoring rule book' not 'how to enter in iscore' ..

I preface below with - first, follow the scoring rules/conventions established for your league/level.

That said, from memory, mlb, ncaa, nfhs, (baseball and softball) would simply consider this a double steal situation. (At its core this is a double steal situation, regardless of the little league or softball antics that may be used between 1st and 2nd).

In a double steal situation, if one runner is out, the other can not get credited with a steal. ( i may have time later to provide specific rule book references. Update: MLB Rule 10.07.d. ).

Rule books would call one runner caught stealing and non out runner advance by fielders choice. ( in iscore, you can enter as advance on the throw)

In practice, your audience may matter

I concur with OhioTex. If both runners are safe, it is a double steal. If one is out, then it is a caught stealing for that runner and a fielder's choice for the one who is safe.

Here is MLB scoring rule citation

9.07.d
"When a double- or triple-steal is attempted and one runner is thrown out before reaching and holding the base such runner is attempting to steal, no other runner shall be credited with a stolen base."
