Winning pitcher (responded)

If you have any rules related questions, please ask in this forum. In general, enforcement of rules is up to the Umpire of the game and iScore does not specifically enforce them, but we want to make sure we score within them. Ask here, and experts can chime in.

Winning pitcher (responded)

Post by ixamnis » Sun Feb 05, 2017 2:53 pm

7 inning NAIA softball game. Visiting Starting pitcher goes 3.2 innings and has given up 2 earned runs in the bottom of the 4th and leaves bases loaded with 2 outs and a 7-2 lead. Relief pitcher#1 comes in and gets first batter faced out on a line drive. Relief Pitcher #1 pitches 5th inning giving up no runs on 2 hits, has no strike outs and no walks. Continues to pitch bottom of 6, walks first batter, gets two ground outs but first batter is advanced to third. Runner on third then scores on ERBI base hit. Next batter also gets a hit and now have runners on first and third. Relief pitcher#2 comes in then and gets first batter faced to pop out for the third out. Relief Pitcher #2 pitches bottom of 7 gives up one hit and strikes out one batter, no walks and no runs scored. Which pitcher gets the win?

5 Inning NAIA/NCAA div 3 game. Visiting starting pitcher is taken out of the game after one out in the bottom of third, leading 12-1 and no one on base. Relief Pitcher #1 gives up no hits in the remainder of the third inning, no strike outs and no walks. In bottom of 4th inning she walks first batter, gives up hits to second, third and fourth batters and has one earned run scored. Gets first out though on a runner getting picked off rounding third base too far, so leaves Relief Pitcher #2 with one out and runners on first and second, who on next batter do a double steal and are now at second and third. This batter pops up to second for second out of the inning. Next batter gets a hit and scores both runners. (2 earned runs charged to Relief Pitcher #1) Next batter bunts and reaches first safely but runner at second is out when rounds base and gets picked off coming back. In the bottom of 5th inning, first batter grounds out, second batter gets on safely on a bunt, then steals second, third batter pops out. 4th batter strikes out swinging to end the game. Again who do you give the win to? My understanding in both games is that the starting pitcher has not pitched enough innings to win the game regardless how effective they were, so the win has to go to one of the two relief pitchers deemed by the scorekeeper to be the most effective.

I'd given the win to the Relief Pitcher #2 in both games due to giving up fewer hits and earned runs. But since I am not the official scorer that isn't what happened. In 7 inning game it was given to the starting pitcher and in 5 inning game it was given to Relief Pitcher #1.

Yep, this week the official scorekeeper gave a sacrifice bunt to the batter even though it was for the third out of the inning. To their credit there was at least a runner at first base! Season is closing in on half over already!

NAIA. Am thankful that someone actually is trying to score the games at this level. Usually a student from the SID office.
