I realize this is a pretty old forum, but figured I'd share my overheating experiences.

We've been having a heat wave in the Northeast for the last 10 days. During our daytime games, I was getting the temperature warning (and accompanying shutdown) about once every 1.5 innings. I had my iPad out of the case, and tried to hold it vertically between pitches to reduce solar receptor surface area. It felt a little silly waving it around to circulate the air.

I always pack a supply of 1-gallon Ziploc bags for the iPad. This protects it from the dust and grit of the field, as well as from the occasional downpour. You can score just fine with the iPad in a Ziploc bag (I recommend keeping the zipper at the bottom).

For the hot days, I've been keeping the iPad out of the Ziploc bag for circulation, but now bring a cooler filled with ice packs to the game. Between innings, I insert the iPad into a Ziploc bag, and plunge it into the ice in the cooler for a minute.

In a recent refinement to the above process, I'm packing Ziploc bags filled with ice. I hold an icebag against the back of the iPad while I'm scoring (you can lean the whole thing against the fence), and that keeps the iPad nice and cool. I'm not sure this is what the crackerjack Apple designers intended when they built this thing, and your fingers do get a little numb holding the ice pack, but it works in an ugly way.

Yesterday I brought my iPad to the Apple store, and was told by a Genius that this is the first time he's ever heard of the temperature problem. He replaced my iPad with a new unit. I'm skeptical that this will have any effect; this doesn't seem like a sample defect to me, but I'll find out this weekend.

Enjoy the new hardware. As you know, not a one off issue...

I have found in upper 80s and direct sun it takes less 15 min to temp out..

My solve...

Number 1 is shade
A virtual must. If a shade structure does not exist, make one, Umbrella, canopy chair etc.

Number 2 is ventilation, no case, no inside ziplock baggie

Number 3 sit ipad on top of zip lock baggie filled with ice packs

Number 4 between games turn off and store in as cool a place as available (cooler) as long as it stays dry.

With this have been able to score 5 hours straight...( triple header)

This happened to me while I was in Monterey, CA. Didn't bring the ice packs because it was cool outside (60's), however, when the sun came out the iPad acted as a solor collector. set it down for a few mintues between games in a double header and the warning came up. Put some chilled water bottles on my lap and put the iPad on that. It worked.

Definately keep it out of direct sunlight.

In anticipation of the ipad overheating this season, I was wondering if anyone found an ice pack (dry pack) the size of the ipad and scoring the entire time on top of it? Is there any isssue with doing that and does anyone have a link to one they like?

After a summer of use, the best solution i found was shade, any shade from a building, shade chair or umbrella. it is the direct reflection more than the ambient temperature that gets you. ( though the ice pack on the lap helped chill the scorekeeper.) with a shade chair, i was able to keep the case on and score all day in 95o weather. Could not score half hour in 80o and direct sun.
