Exporting/sharing data with another device

Post by paulmcclung » Mon Jul 07, 2014 8:00 am

I have always used my iPad to score games, but have had several occasions where I either ran out of battery or the iPad overheated in the sun, and I was left to go to paper to finish a game or tournament. Consequently, I put iScore on my iPhone as well, but have never used it to date.

This morning, I decided to try to set up the iPhone so that I could use it, but noticed that the two devices have different Customer ID numbers. So I have a couple of questions: 1) How do I set up the two devices to share data? 2) Can I simply resume scoring a game with the phone if the iPad runs out of battery or overheats, or do I need to take an intermediate step of exporting the game data? If so, is that done from the game itself, or do I have to exit and use options to export all data?

Thanks,

Paul

your situation is not uncommon , battery life and overheating.. some people do exactly what you propose score on both tablet and phone and share data back and forth between devices post game through what we call OPTION > DATA SHARING .. consolidate to one device that then updates their team web site subscription with OPTION > EXPORT ...

there are some great FAQs listed on iscoresports web site. specifically on DATA SHARING
http://iscoresports.com/baseball/kb/faq ... _share.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

so you know, iscore (as a 10$ app) is not designed for multiple scorers to work simultaneously on singular game with different devices. as a 10$ app, it is designed for one device to score one game at a time but then has the ability for you to transfer the game information to a other secondary devices. having separate device IDs enables this. you can score on one device, export or iscorecast synch the game to iscore servers, then OPTION > DATA SHARE > GET FROM WEB to retrieve the game on a separate device using the original source device user ID and password. (optionally you can use blue tooth see FAQ link for more info and restrictions on that)

In practice, when battery life at 5%. on iPad, a trick i use when i am scoring a single game and need to very quickly get it "to the cloud" is to do an "iscorecast sync" from the Game Info screen on iPad. ( updates the iscorecast server) .then i can retrieve it from a second device (iPhone), using a special SC: code in front of iPad device id. …. OPTION > DATA SHARE > GET FROM WEB > SC:DEVICEID and PASSWORD (note the SC: in front of a device ID allows you to access the iscorecast server list of games, which is separate than the full data base found at iscorecentral.com that is updated with Option Export, this saves time and battery when in a mission critical rush)

another user tip. do not panic. if a game is already on a device (even if partial or older) it will not show up on OPTION > DATA SHARE , it must be removed from the receiving device before you can transfer in an updated version.

Few differences with iPad and iPhone. but i find for experienced users, iPhone can be easier on hot , sunny days. less battery drain and glare

Thanks guys. Very good help. It is a bit clunky, but I just fiddled around with a dummy game to practice. I started the game on the iPad, then stopped after an inning, exited the game, exported the data, then transferred the data via bluetooth. I then opened the game on my iPhone, recorded another inning, exited the game, exported the data, then tried to bluetooth it back. As you suggested, it would not transfer the updated game from my phone until I deleted the old game from the iPad. That was great advice as I would have never figured that one out on my own.

Thanks again,

Paul

I am glad u got devices to connect. And where able to share a test game between devices

I have found Bluetooth connection can often be 'challanging ' and generally only use when I do not have internet connectivity.

If I have internet connectivity and can export .. I generally find option > data share> get from web database easier and more reliable .

But FYI if u do use Bluetooth to data share You do not have to 'export' before a Bluetooth transfer as the data is going straight from device to device . Not through the internet servers

Thanks again. That's interesting about the export. I tried the bluetooth without exporting first, but it acted as if there were no new games to import. But I did have one other question I forgot to ask last night. If I was broadcasting from the iPad with one customer number, then switch to the iPhone with a different customer number, do I need to send out a new link to continue to broadcast that game?

Yes, the iScorecasts are tied to a customer ID, and each device has its own.

If you use a Customer Scoreboard, people can view games from any devices you configure from that custom scoreboard. See the following link for more information on custom Scoreboards:

are you sure you had removed the game from the target device.? the same filter rule applies with bluetooth, if a game already exists on the receiving device, even if out of date, it will not be visible…

you are correct there would be a unique iscorecast id for each game..

FTM Support points out you can use scoreboards to consolidate iscorecasts from different devices, (neat feature but requires a web site and it would show up as "two separate" games.. (to help the viewer know which game is "current" you can delete the old iscorecast from the hand held device.. under the game info screen)

you can also send out links in advance that provide an index of your entire device that they can book mark, still two links of course.
http://data.iscorecentral.com/iscorecast/c=deviceid" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

…...
switching devices mid game is obviously not an ideal practice , ideally you can use the same device all day or switch between games.. but as we have discussed in this thread it is "manageable" with some effort..

from what i can gather on this forum, many heavy iscore users invest in a battery backup instead of multiple devices.. but to each his own

One small correction... the scoreboards do not require a website. You can send out the link directly to a scoreboard. They are designed to fit well embedded in a website, but it is not required.
