Infield collision

Post by rvangundy » Sat May 17, 2014 12:36 pm

Hi,

During a game today, the short stop and third basemen miscommunicated on a pop-up, the result being they collided and the ball dropped between them. The hitter reached on an error, obviously, but is the error charged to the short stop or the third basemen? Both shared the blame equally, it seems to me. Is there any criteria for charging the error to one player and not the other? Thanks.

I don't believe there are any guidelines set for this. If decision is to charge an error, you just have to make a judgement call.

I agree judgment call, but SS is considered the boss of the infield. It would be their duty to call off the other position. Hard to say without being there though.

I've seen a nearly identical play in MiLB ruled an infield hit.
