Was looking at the play-by-play and box score of a college game from last night. Their scoring software notes which runs are earned/unearned in the game log so I've indicated them as (E) or (U) below. If I think of this sequence, I have 3ER. iScore does, too. What am I missing that makes it only 1 ER?
The sequence was:
Abel doubles
Baker reaches on CI
Charlie sacrifices (1 out); Abel to 3rd, Baker to 2nd
Daniel walks
Edward singles; Abel scores (E), Baker scores (U), Daniel to 3rd
Wild pitch; Daniel scores (U), Edward to 2nd
Frank walks
Wild pitch; Edward to 3rd, Frank to 2nd
George strikes out (2 out)
Wild pitch; Edward scores (U), Frank to 3rd
Henry grounds out (3 out)
OK, so we reconstruct the inning without errors to determine ER. By rule, Baker can never be earned since he reached on CI. That's an error, but as far as I can tell it's not like "normal" fielding errors in which you could assume him to be out. From what I can tell, you can't assume anything about him since it's impossible to know the result of his AB. There are no other errors so I'm not sure how the others can be unearned.
Again, this was NCAA so it's under their rules, not the OBR, but I don't think there's a significant difference here.
So what am I missing?
What am I missing (Earned vs Unearned Run)?
Re: What am I missing (Earned vs Unearned Run)?
From what I can see, I agree with you.

If the wild pitches were scored as passed balls, it could make a difference.
