RBI on double play

Post by teddog » Tue Sep 24, 2013 10:38 am

Hi All!

I'm new to the forum, have a question regarding RBIs (actually from a fastpitch softball game, but no doubt same rules apply in this case):

Runners on second and third, 1 out. Batter hits fly to outfield, which is caught for out #2. Runner on third tags and scores, runner on second tags and moves to third. Defense appeals that runner on second left early, appeal upheld, runner declared out.

Does the hitter get an RBI, even though the play was technically a double-play? Ump ruled that run did indeed count.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum

I would credit the batter with a Sacrifice fly and an RBI if the umpire said the run counted. and I would also credit the fielders for participating in a double play.

Will use MLB rules as a guide.. for why....

section 10.04 says to credit runners with RBIs when they have a sac fly.. ...
MLB § 10.04 RUNS BATTED IN

A run batted in is a statistic credited to a batter whose action at bat causes one or more runs to score, as set forth in this Rule 10.04.
(a) The official scorer shall credit the batter with a run batted in for every run that scores
(1) unaided by an error and as part of a play begun by the batter’s safe hit (including the batter’s home run), sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly, infield out or fielder’s choice, unless Rule 10.04(b) applies;

(2) by reason of the batter becoming a runner with the bases full (because of a base on balls, an award of first base for being touched by a pitched ball or for interference or obstruction); or

(3) when, before two are out, an error is made on a play on which a runner from third base ordinarily would score.

Section 10.04 b is the passage that precludes giving a batter an RBI when they ground into a double play.. but note. it is a ground ball double play. not a fly out double play.

MLB § 10.04 RUNS BATTED IN
(b) The official scorer shall not credit a run batted in
(1) when the batter grounds into a force double play or a reverse-force double play; or
(2) when a fielder is charged with an error because the fielder muffs a throw at first base that would have completed a force double play.
Here is the section that confirms, appeal plays can be part of a double play..
MLB § 10.11 Comment: The official scorer shall credit a double play or triple play also if an appeal play after the ball is in possession of the pitcher results in an additional putout.
