@Rosborn

If you start to get "semi serious" about scoring, I suggest reading MLB Rule 10, although different leagues may have some variations (NCAA, NFHS, ASA, LL etc, ) , MLB is generally the "default standard " when it comes to official scoring protocols. Some you will find, like Assist, are just "by rule", not always intuitive - but when consistently applied, effective. In fact we have a whole sub thread on this forum to discuss "Scoring Questions"
(PS. I have moved this Thread from "New Product Updates" , to "Scoring Questions"

Thanks for the great discussion. I too am a bit confused on how to score an error with this new feature. Here is my simple example. Please tell me the key strokes you would recommend.

Situation. Runner on first, batter hits routine ground ball that goes through SS lets. Clearly there should be at least one out (Fielders Choice) and possibly a double play.

I press In Play. Tap where the ball went, (medium grounder). It asks what happen to runner who was on first. I tap 2nd and choose Error and choose SS. The what happened to batter. I choose Error and again tap on SS. (at the bottom I choose fielding on the "fielding/throwing" button, and choose "yes" if the player would have been out. I am assuming the SS only gets charged with one error even though I pressed the error button 3 times (please confirm). Also, I suspect the pitcher is not charged with an earned run (if these two score later).

Would you functionally score this any differently?

Thanks

For this play, you have to decide whether the lead runner would have been out on the play (in which case you would score it with a FC for the batter, and runner safe at second by Error and Yes for "would have been out" when using advanced scoring mode), or if the lead runner would have been safe at second (in which case you would score it as an E for the batter reaching, and runner safe at second with Advanced by Batter).

One of those two runners is still eligible to be an earned run (whichever you did not mark as an error).

You can not mark both as an error as you can not assume a double play on the ground ball. If you mark both as an Error, the SS would only be charged with one error, but you would be telling iScore that neither run is eligible to be earned.

FTM Support answered the question on how to enter the play in iSCORE..

this example also shows if you aspire to be "technically correct" (aka MLB 'official') you may also need additional knowledge of "official MLB scoring practices" and at times will also have to apply scorers judgment to assess the situation "live" using your judgement

Here are some excerpts from MLB rules on when to charge / not charge Errors .. I also included the comment that clarifies that in some instances there can be two errors on a double play ball. but the common phrase of "can't assume a double play" is correct

you choose game setting options from both the iOS and Andorid devices from NEW GAME SCREEN > OPTIONS >
(right below where you enter visitor, home team names and scheduled game time)

both platforms, support what i consider "Advance Scoring Mode",
by setting Scorekeeper Level (advanced) and Minimize Questions (no) as described on the provided link and copied below for easy reference. .
As documented in the link provided by FTM Support. .... http://iscoreleagues.com/manual/#h.2q4k99qxrzsl

Scorekeeper Level - Setting this to Advanced allows you to score some situations that many scorekeepers do not care to capture. Turning on advanced will give a few more options when scoring plays. For example, when scoring an Error, you can select whether it is a Fielding or Throwing error. It also allows you to score situations where a fielder should get an assist even when a putout is not made (e.g. SS throws to 1B, but 1B drops the ball. SS gets an assist in this scenario.) Also, on running plays it will ask you if the error should have resulted in an out. This will help more accurately determine ERA. If you are scoring for youth games or are new to scorekeeping, leaving this in Basic mode will keep things as simple as possible.

Minimize Questions - In order to capture a complete and accurate accounting of a game, iScore asks questions designed to ensure every action is recorded. This includes asking questions such as what happens to the batter after he becomes a runner. In most cases the response would be Advance by Batter or Held Up, but in some cases the batter may advance additional bases after reaching the initial base. Take, for example, a runner on second and the batter hits a single. As the runner on second tries for home, the batter goes for second "On the throw". The play would therefore be scored as a single, and when asked what happened to the batter after reaching first you would enter Safe, at Second, On the Throw.

If you prefer to be prompted for this information, set Minimize Questions to No. If you prefer to not have to enter "Held Up" for most cases and instead wish to remember to enter the additional actions when they occur, set Minimize Questions to Yes.
