Gonna go out on a limb here and say this is a miss-play as described in OhioTex's extended example...

Description:

Miss-Play = Results from a play that could have been made with normal effort. By example...this same outcome with no one on base would be judged an error. (Line drive in glove that in the opinion of the scorekeeper should have been caught. Dropped)

Deflection = Results from a play that could not be made with normal effort. By example....this same outcome with no one on base would not be judged an error.

** Bottom line...my subjective viewing based on the above wouldn't allow me to consider a "miss-play" as a deflection.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but was hoping to get feedback on a similar play.

Runner on 2nd. Line drive to SS who makes the catch, throws back to second in plenty of time to double up runner, but second baseman drops ball.

Can't charge an error here, correct? The old "can't assume a double play"...even if not a traditional double play?

What about a situation where an out is made, but an error allows a runner to advance?

Say runner on first. Fly ball to cf for out. Runner tries to advance after tagging up. Throw to second in plenty of time, second basemen drops throw. Ok to charge an error here?

I don't have access at the moment to cut and paste the exact MLB rules..
But recall the rules provide you can record an error on a failed double play when dropped by first base. Eg 6-4-3 type double play ,

I think you can extend the thinking to another base . If the throw is solid and the receiver just drops it. They can get an error and the runner a gid..

You are correct. Here it is:
Rule 10.12(d) Comment: When a fielder muffs a thrown ball that, if held, would have completed a double play or triple play, the official scorer shall charge an error to the fielder who drops the ball and credit an assist to the fielder who made the throw.

I would agree with charging an error on the muffed throw. I assume the throw was good and it would take ordinary effort to make the catch.
