Earned run question

Post by williamroycepaige » Fri Aug 31, 2012 10:51 am

One out Batter hits double. Runner at second advances to third on passed ball, batter hits single and scores runner but if runner were at second still runner would not have been able to score on hit. Next two batters strike out and end the inning. Is that an earned run or an unearned run.

Well, the highlighted text provides the answer: unearned run (as a passed ball does not contribute to an earned run), as you've shown that the run would not have scored without the aid of the PB.

Had you judged that if the runner would have scored from second on the single, then count the run as earned.

Here is an analogous case:
With one out, batter 2 doubles to left field, but reaches third base on an E7.
batter 3 singles to score batter 2 (but we judged that the hit would not have scored the runner if he was on second)
Following two batters strike out to end the inning.
Again, the run is unearned (and may need to override the earned run designation if not already marked unearned)
