Error on who?

Post by ixamnis » Thu Apr 02, 2015 7:38 am

Runner at first attempts to steal on the pitch. Catcher throws to second base. Neither the shortstop or the second baseman gets to the bag in time to catch the ball. Center fielder is backing up the bag, but lets the ball get past her and the runner goes to third base. I scored it stolen base and the error on the center fielder allowing the runner to end up at third. Official scorekeeper gave a stolen base but then gave the error to the shortstop.

As is normal, it is difficult to tell without seeing it live, but from your description I would tend to agree with you. To me, if the middle infielders can't reach the bag in time, then the error is on either the catcher for the throw, or the CF for misplaying the ball. You would have to decide whether the misplay is what allowed the runner to advance to third or if the throw itself was so bad that it led to the extra base. The only way I could give the error to the SS is if they tripped or were just loafing towards the base. Those would be physical misplays that 'ordinary effort' by a fielder would not make.

I am finding that even at the college level, not only do players, coaches and umpires make mistakes, but so do the official scorekeepers. ;-) Just now our shortstop has an error she didn't deserve on her official stats and our center fielder still has a 1.000 fielding percentage. (Neither are my daughter by the way)

Even at the pros, they have been known to go back and revise the official scorer decisions.
